The Glacier Symphony Orchestra and Chorale is a regional semi-professional orchestra with an auditioned chorale currently in its 42nd season and located in Kalispell, Montana near Glacier National Park. Concerts are performed year-round including the main Masterworks Series of classical symphonic music, pops and holiday concerts. Additionally we have a Summer Outdoor Pops concert and Festival Amadeus, a classical music festival along with several private events and chamber concerts.

Performances are in our home concert venue -- the new and acoustically superb McClaren Hall in the Wachholz College Center.

The Symphony has tripled its budget in the last 5 years while maintaining its visibility and relevance, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic and is currently poised for tremendous growth opportunities.



The Position
Glacier Symphony is seeking a dynamic, visionary and entrepreneurial leader as our Executive Director. This person will play a pivotal role in shapingthe Glacier Symphony's currentmomentum: ensuringits continued growth, relevance and impact within the community and beyond. With a blend of strategic vision, financial acumen and dedication to musical perfection, the Executive Director will work with the Artistic Director and Board of Directors to drive the Symphony's mission of delivering live symphonic performances of unparalleled excellence towards a vibrant and sustainable future.
What You Will Do
  1. Strategic Planning: Develop and implement comprehensive strategic plans to steer the long-term growth and sustainability of the orchestra, in alignment with our mission and values.
  2. Financial Management: Oversee the organization's financial health, including budget management, financial operations, fundraising efforts, and proactive grant writing.
  3. Fundraising and Development: Lead major fundraising initiatives, nurture donor relationships, and innovate new revenue streams to bolster the orchestra's programs and activities.
  4. Community Engagement: Foster robust relationships with community partners, patrons, sponsors, and supporters to expand the orchestra's reach and influence. Attendance at all Symphonic events is integral to this role.
  5. Program Development: Support the Artistic Director's overall vision, planning of concert programs, educational initiatives, and outreach activities that resonate with the orchestra's artistic vision and serve diverse audiences.
  6. Board Governance: Provide steadfast support to the Board of Directors in governance matters, board development, and strategic decision-making, upholding the orchestra's mission and values.
  7. Marketing and Public Relations: Direct marketing campaigns, public relations endeavors, and audience retention and attract new audiences.
  8. Organization Management Set the tone and the culture of the organization; oversee the day-to-day operations; hire high-performing staff and provide an inclusive leadership style empowering staff to excel, ensure appropriate and adequate systems and tools for the staff.
  9. Advocacy: Together with the Artistic Director, serve as a passionate advocate for the orchestra and classical music within the community, championing the value of music education and cultural enrichment.
  10. Concert Management: Venue contracting, guest artist travel arrangements, event planning, insurance coverage and budget compliance.
The Strengths You Bring

A Bachelor's degree focused on arts administration, non-profit management, business administration, or music or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree education is a plus.

3+ years of experience in performing arts administration, including significant leadership and management experience. Experienced working in and with symphony orchestras is a plus.

Demonstrated success in significantly and sustainably growing an organization's fundraising year-over-year, particularly through expanding individual giving programs and cultivating new institutional donor relationships

Exceptional organizational and time management skills, able to handle multiple overlapping deadlines, operate independently, self-starter,

Strong, demonstrated financial acumen in budgeting (> $1 M+ budget), grant writing, cash flow management, endowments and strategic planning.

Innovative marketing skills with a grasp of both traditional and emerging approaches and tools and demonstrated success in attracting and growing diverse audiences

Strong work ethic with exceptional verbal, written and visual communication skills

A passion for classical music and the ability to communicate the importance of orchestral music to a wide range of audiences and a deep understanding of the challenges facing professional symphonies in the current environment.

    The Search Committee is totally committed to finding the best-fit qualified candidate to fill the vacancy as soon as possible. It is difficult to pinpoint at this time how long the entire recruiting efforts will take. It is not unusual to take 4 to 6 months to select the most qualified candidate and fill the Executive Director position.

The Glacier Symphony and Chorale is now in its 42nd season, with concerts year-round, offering 25 or more performances per year plus hosting many private events and chamber concerts. Its annual budget has now grown to be greater than $1M. We are also grateful that our Artistic Director is currently in their 28th season. With such a legacy that has been nurtured and sustained, the Board is careful to find the right person to lead the business side of the organization.
